COACHES' ADVICE
CONSEILS D'ENTRAINEURS
 

Ernie Comerford and the Calgary Association of Youth Curling Instructors and
Coaches (CAYCIC) have produced a Coaching Seminars Video Series to assist both
new and experienced coaches. The unique 100 Member Association believes that
this video series is the first of its kind produced by coaches anywhere in
Canada. With co-operation from the Calgary Youth Curling Association (CYCA)
and the Southern Alberta Curling Association (SACA), five informal coaching
seminars were videotaped to allow for future reference. 

The series provides an opportunity for experienced coaches and other curling
resource personnel to pass on their thoughts and experiences on a number of
topics which all coaches face.
 
 Tape/Cassette 1: Mental Training for Curlers (76 minutes)
                   How to Achieve Team Dynamics (62 minutes)

  ° Mr. Bill Tschirhart, National Development Coach for the CCA, who is based at the
    National Training Centre in Calgary, conducted both seminars. A wealth of advice
    is offered in these areas.
 
 Tape/Cassette 2: How to Run a Practice¹ (31 minutes)
                   Pre-Game, 5th End and Post-Game Talks² (65 minutes)
                   Curling Rocks and the Environment³ (65 minutes)

 ¹° Several experienced coaches offer their ideas on "rules" to follow and their advice
    on making practices meaningful and successful. There are suggestions on the
    establishment of "rules for practices" as well as a variety of drill suggestions to
    assist all skill levels.
 ²° A panel of experienced coaches offer their ideas on what methods have been successful
    for them.
 ³° Mr. Jamie Bourassa, Master Ice Technician at the Calgary Curling Club, offers insight
    into a better understanding of the mysteries pertaining to the idiosyncrasies of rocks,
    icemaking and the many other factors that coaches should be aware of for any ice
    surfaces encountered.
